GuideWayside shrines

Wayside shrines

Along the way stand small shrines: an altar under a little roof, with a weathered statue and unlit candles. Light the candles and an ancestor watches over you.

A sandstone shrine with an acacia roof, an altar with candles and a small courtyard with benches and lanterns, in a savanna
A shrine in the savanna. In forests and meadows they're stone and oak, in the cold north cobblestone and spruce.

Finding a shrine

Shrines are small and fairly common: you'll pass one every few hundred blocks while exploring plains, forests, taiga, snowy lands, savanna, desert and badlands. They stand on level ground, never in a lake or on a cliff edge. When you step inside one, you hear its name, such as the Shrine of the Last Traveller. Every shrine keeps its name.

An ancestor's blessing

Light the altar candles with flint and steel or a fire charge. Your most recent ancestor watches over you for ten minutes, with a blessing that matches how they lived:

Your ancestor wasBlessing
the Slayer, the Bold, the FierceStrength
the Delver, the Stonebreaker, the Deep-DiggerHaste
the Wanderer, the Far-Walker, the RestlessSpeed
the Angler, the PatientLuck
the Shepherd, the HerderRegeneration
the Merchant, the Silver-TonguedHero of the Village
the Scarred, the UnbrokenResistance

the DevotedStrength and Resistance

A founder has no ancestors yet, and prays for the generations still to come: Luck.

A first visit

The first time anyone of your house prays at a shrine, the house gains 1 renown and the Chronicle records it. Every shrine counts once, so travelling the land adds up.
