GuideDeath & heirs

Death & heirs

When your character dies, they become an ancestor and you continue as one of their three children. Here is how it works, and what they inherit.

When you die

  1. Your character gets an epithet based on how they lived, such as the Wanderer, the Delver or the Slayer. A life shorter than one Minecraft day (20 minutes of play) makes them the Brief.
  2. When you respawn, you are in mourning: you can move around, but quests and heirlooms are paused, and other players see you as "Heir of House …".
  3. Choose your heir: a scroll opens with each child as a portrait card showing their traits. Hover a card to see what each trait does, and click it to choose that child. Closed the scroll by accident? Click [Choose] in chat, or use the first page of the Chronicle. If you wait more than two minutes, the family picks the first child.
  4. Your new character's traits apply, and new duties arrive from the ancestor who died.

How traits are inherited

  • Each of the parent's boons and quirks has a 50% chance to pass to a child; each flaw 35%.
  • Every child also gets one new trait the parent didn't have: usually a boon, sometimes a flaw or quirk.
  • A family member has at most 4 traits.
  • A parent who died young (the Brief) passes on nothing: each child has just one trait of their own. Dying on purpose makes your family weaker, not stronger.
  • After a Sacrifice, every child keeps all of the parent's boons.
  • Legendary traits belong to the house: every member is born with them.
