Inns & the steward

Every village has an inn, and roadside inns stand on their own out in the wild: an innkeeper by the bell with a quest board of five jobs that change every Minecraft day.

The quest board

  • Walk into a village and stand near its bell for a few seconds: the innkeeper appears and the inn gets a name, such as The Sleeping Griffin.
  • Right-click the innkeeper to open the quest board. Hover over a job for details and click it to accept. You can hold 2 inn jobs at a time; they end if your character dies.
  • Every inn posts different jobs, and they change each morning. A board never shows more than two jobs of the same kind.

Roadside inns

Between villages you sometimes come across a lone roadside inn: a timber-framed hall with a slate roof, a stable and a stone lantern tower. Look for the column of smoke from the signal fire on top of the tower; you can see it above the treetops from far away.

  • The innkeeper waits behind the bar, next to the bell. Stand inside for a few seconds and they appear, just like in a village.
  • The quest board says (Roadside Inn), and its jobs pay half again as many emeralds as a village inn. Rumours and courier letters pay the same as anywhere.
  • Upstairs are guest rooms where you can sleep and set your spawn, and the innkeeper's room with a strongbox of emeralds, food and maps. The stable has a horse, a donkey and a chest of tack, sometimes with a saddle.
  • Behind the inn is a kitchen garden with ripe crops, and the innkeeper keeps a cat by the fire.
  • Climb the ladder in the tower, behind the bar or from the innkeeper's room, for a view of the land around.

Roadside inns only appear in newly explored land: plains, meadows, forests, taiga, savanna, snowy plains and cherry groves, never right next to a village.

The steward

A steward looks after your house's belongings in the family vault, shared by every member of the house.

  • Hire one from any quest board for 10 emeralds. You need to have slept in a bed first: the steward waits at your bed.
  • Talk to the steward to open the vault. It has 3 slots, 6 at 25 renown and 9 at 50. Slots that still hold items never lock, even if renown drops.
  • Moved house? The same board option sends your steward to your current bed for 2 emeralds.
  • The steward does not save your items when you die.

If an heirloom of yours is destroyed, the inns are where the rumours start: see The Stolen Heirloom.
